The Lord Smites Egypt and Later Heals It (19:1–25)

Isaiah

19 1A prophecy against Egypt:
Behold, the LORD is riding on a swift cloud and is coming to Egypt,

and the idols of Egypt will tremble at His presence,
and the heart of Egypt will melt within it.

The Lord

2And I will provoke Egyptian against Egyptian,
and they will fight, everyone against his brother,

and everyone against his neighbor, city against city,
kingdom against kingdom.

3And the spirit of the Egyptians will be emptied from within,
and I will confound their plans,

and they will seek the idols
and the spirits of the dead
and the mediums and spiritists.

4And I will deliver the Egyptians into the cruel masters,
and a mighty king will rule over them,

Isaiah

declares the Lord, the LORD of Hosts.

The Lord

5And the waters of the sea will dry up,
and the river will be parched and dry.

6And the rivers will become foul,
and the branches of Egypt’s Nile will diminish and dry up.

The reeds and rushes will wither;
7the reeds along the Nile, on the banks of the Nile,

everything that is sown by the Nile will dry up,
be driven away and be no more.

8And the fishermen will mourn,
and all who cast fishhook into the Nile will lament,
and those who spread fishing nets upon the waters will grieve.

9Those who work with flax that is combed will be ashamed,
and the weavers will turn pale.

10And its foundations will be crushed,
and all wage earners will despair.

11Surely the officials of Zoan are fools;
the wise counselors of Pharaoh give absurd council,

How can one say to Pharaoh,

Unnamed individual

“I am descended from wise men;
I am descended from ancient kings?”

Isaiah

12Where are they?
Where are your wise men?

Let them tell you now
and make known what the LORD of Hosts has planned against Egypt.

13The officers of Zoan have become fools;
the officers of Memphis are deceived.

They have caused Egypt to err,
the cornerstone of its tribes.

14The LORD has mingled within it a spirit of confusion,
and they have caused Egypt to stagger in all its works, as a drunk staggers in his vomit.

15And there will be nothing for Egypt
that head or tail, palm branch or reed, may do.

16In that day the Egyptians will be like women,
and will tremble and fear

because of the uplifted hand of the LORD of Hosts,
which He lifts over it.

17And the land of Judah will be a terror to Egypt,
and it will fear whenever anyone mentions it,

because of what the LORD of Hosts is planning against it.

Isaiah

18In that day there will be five cities in the land of Egypt speaking the language of Canaan and swearing to the LORD of Hosts.

Unnamed individuals

“The City of the Sun,”[1]

Isaiah

it will be said of one of them.

19In that day will there be an altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt
and a pillar to the LORD at its border.

20And it will be for a sign and for a witness unto the LORD of Hosts in the land of Egypt, for they will cry unto the LORD because of oppressors,

and He will send them the Savior,
and the Defender, and He will deliver them.

21And the LORD will be known to the Egyptians,
and the Egyptians will know the LORD in that day,

and they will worship with sacrifice and offerings,
and they will vow a vow unto the LORD and perform it.

22And the LORD will smite Egypt;
He will smite and heal it,

and they will return to the LORD,
and He will heed their supplications, and He will heal them.

23In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria,
and Assyria will come into Egypt,

and Egypt into Assyria,
and Egypt will worship with Assyria.

24In that day will Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria,
a blessing in the midst of the earth.

25The LORD of Hosts will bless them, saying,

The Lord

“Blessed is Egypt, My people,

and Assyria, the work of My hands,
and Israel, My inheritance.”
