Abstract | After seeking to understand his father's vision, Nephi was shown the virgin Mary of Nazarath and the Christ child in a vision. Christensen drew heavily on traditional European symbols and images for depicting the Virgin and child for this painting: Mary wears a blue robe; the Christ child is bare to the waist with his hand raised in blessing; Mary standing in a concave [usually depicting either as clouds or as a crescent moon]; light comes from the mother and child like the rays of the sun. The wingless angel, however, is purely Latter-day Saint iconography. |
