Abstract | After victory over the forces of Amalickiah and Ammoron, the Nephites experienced several years of continual peace, great prosperity, and church growth. Yet these years of blessing soon led the Nephites to “exceedingly great pride.” Dissenting Nephites joined the Lamanites, and in the resulting war many Nephites were killed, the city of Zarahemla was captured, and the Nephite government was exiled. Because of these losses, the Nephites recognized that “they had become weak, like unto their brethren, the Lamanites, and that the Spirit of the Lord did no more preserve them.” This sobering narrative warns against the dangers of pride and spiritual complacency. |
