Abstract | Isaiah 53, known as the “Song of the Suffering Servant,” has inspired Christians and Jews alike, and is the subject of intense academic investigation. While there are many different interpretations of the text, and theories for its origins, one scholarly interpretation is that it was inspired by the suffering and intercession of the ancient Israelite prophets. Abinadi, the only martyr in the Book of Mormon, fits this paradigm well and his story mirrors Isaiah 53. It is no wonder Abinadi turned to this beautiful and inspiring prophecy for defense and refuge. |
