Abstract | The emphasis on the Zoramites’ being “lifted up” in pride is likely a wordplay on the name Zoram, which can mean “high” or “exalted” in ancient Semitic languages. This wordplay is especially apparent in the discussion of the elevated platform called the Rameumptom, from which the Zoramites offered their vain prayers. Not only was the Rameumptom described as being “high above the head,” but the element “ram” in “Rameumptom” is the likely the same element in “Zoram” that means “high” or “exalted.” |
