Abstract | The prophet Nephi wrote a curious explanatory comment that the Messiah was to be "a Savior of the world." This may perplex modern Christian readers of the Book of Mormon who are well aware of the New Testament's portrayal of Jesus as the Messiah. When viewed in the context of ancient Israelite religion, however, Nephi's clarification about the nature of the Messiah makes sense, since the ancient Israelites understood the concept of the Messiah much more broadly than how it is understood by modern Christians. |
