The Book of Mormon vividly describes hell as "a lake of fire and brimstone." It likewise speaks of the "second death" suffered by those who die without having been redeemed through Christ. While the language of a "lake of fire and brimstone" might well come from the New Testament, the underlying imagery and concept can be traced much further back by many centuries. Nephi's description of the lake of fire and brimstone may thus have plausible ancient Near Eastern parallels.
