Abstract

Nephi begins his record with a "colophon," or a literary tool that provides summary information about the text, its contents, and its author/scribe. The use of colophons is widely attested in the ancient Near East, reinforcing the Book of Mormon's antiquity. Colophons likewise help structure the Book of Mormon text by introducing source-texts and quotations.
