Abstract

When describing his vision of the tree of life, Lehi said that people “did press forward through the mist of darkness, clinging to the rod of iron,” eventually reaching the tree of life (1 Nephi 8:24). Yet one wonders why they needed to “press forward” and “cling” to the rod, if they were simply walking through a level plain. The account of Lehi’s vision suggests that the tree of life was on a hill or mountain that people had to pull themselves up. The similarities between the Garden of Eden and Lehi's vision support this supposition.
