Abstract

The gifts of the Magi, gold, frankincense, and myrrh, are seen by some to be symbolic. Gold represents Christ’s kingship, frankincense his role as a priest, and myrrh was thought to foreshadow Christ’s death. The motif of Christ as King often appears in the Book of Mormon, most often in references to Jesus as "Christ" or "Messiah," which can refer to kings, 2 Nephi 2:7 refers to Christ’s role as priest, offering himself as a sin offering, and the power of Christ’s death and resurrection is the essence of the Book of Mormon.
