Abstract

When Joseph and Hyrum Smith faced martyrdom, they turned to the Book of Mormon for understanding and purpose. The Book of Mormon depicts many examples of valiancy in the face of persecution and death, and perhaps better than any other book of scripture, it explains the purposes of sorrow and suffering. Regularly reading from its pages can help us confront the growing trend of religious violence and persecution in modern societies.
