Abstract

Several members of Zion’s camp remembered Joseph having identified the bones of a Lamanite warrior named Zelph, who had died in battle. In an 1846 account, Zelph was directly linked to the final battles fought between the Nephites and Lamanites in the fourth century AD. However, Joseph Smith himself left behind no direct statements about Zelph, and the earliest accounts show that the connection between Zelph and the Book of Mormon is actually very tenuous.
