Abstract

The Lord, through Joseph Smith, warned the church to “beware of pride, lest ye become as the Nephites of old.” This warning was likely an uncomfortable one for the early Saints, as becoming as the Nephites of old would mean complete destruction. Failure to listen to the prophet was exactly the reason the Nephites were destroyed. As the Nephite civilization was collapsing, Mormon and Moroni used Samuel the Lamanite’s exact words to remind the people that failure to listen to the prophets is what led to their destruction.
