Abstract | Doctrine and Covenants 59 describes how people should observe the Sabbath. The revelation was addressed to those who had recently moved to Independence, Missouri, and came in response to the actions of their neighbors, who didn’t keep the Sabbath. Alma’s people in Mosiah 18 were in a similar position to the saints in Missouri, and both Doctrine and Covenants 59 and Mosiah 18 emphasizes the Sabbath. It makes sense that the Lord would emphasize the Sabbath to help people create a new identity in a new place. As demonstrated by the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants, the Sabbath can be a force for good in the lives of all those who observe it. |
