Abstract | The story of the prophet Enos demonstrates some of the ways people can liken the scriptures to themselves. John A. Tvedtnes and Matthew Roper argued that Enos’s wrestle with God is an allusion to Jacob’s wrestle with God in Genesis. Enos also applied Job 33:26 directly to himself, likely because the Hebrew word “enos” was included in the verse. In addition to looking at an isolated verse and applying it to himself, as in the example from Job, Enos also looked at the broader similarities between his own experiences and Jacob’s experiences and applied them to himself. Modern readers can do the same today. |
