Abstract | Alma reminded the people of Ammonihah of the promise that “Inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments, ye shall prosper in the land . . . Inasmuch as ye will not keep my commandments ye shall be cut off from the presence of the Lord.” This promise permeates the Book of Mormon and serves as a driving thesis in Mormon’s record. The parallel expressions in the promise are set up as opposites, indicating that prospering in the land is equivalent to having the Lord’s presence. Though some commentators have called it the “Lehitic covenant,” the essence of the covenantal promise was also given to Israel as a whole. The blessings of “prosperity” belong to all who keep their covenantal commitments. |
