Abstract

Joseph and Hyrum Smith are remembered in Latter-day Saint memory as martyrs for the Gospel. But what does it mean to be a martyr? More than merely suffering for religious convictions, the word literally means "witness" and in a Gospel sense carries with it a special connotation beyond its popular usage. Joseph and Hyrum were truly martyrs for the Book of Mormon in the fullest sense of the word.
