Hearts of the Children
I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers. (Mal. 4:5-6)
In the palm of one hand,
I hold the Book that begins
In the beginning. . . .
It was published in Philadelphia
in 1806, the same year
the Holy Roman Empire ended.
Two hundred years
have discolored the paper,
brittled crumbling leather.
Carefully,
as I would stroke feathers
of a fallen sparrow,
I touch pages once edged with gold,
examine fragile evidence
of an ancestor’s life and faith.
I study the faded brown ink,
Sarah – wife of Hance Hamilton
born October 20, 1800
sons – William and David
and write the names of those who wait.
