Abstract

Epibole occurs when "the same sentence or phrase is cast upon or laid upon (like layers or courses of bricks) several successive paragraphs." Expressed another way, an epibole is several words repeated close together in an irregular way. Furthermore, epibole may involve the appearance of words in a text as if they had been thrown into it or layered in. This layering effect is also common in chiasmus.
