And our women did bear children in the wilderness

This piece received an Honorable Mention in the 2019 Book of Mormon Central Art Contest.

This piece was inspired by the artist's fascination with the women in the scriptures and portrays the wife of Nephi, whose name is unknown. In 1 Nephi 17:1-2, we learn that the women “bore children in the wilderness” and “were strong, yea, even like unto the men”. In the background, olive branches represent the “fruitful bough” that “run over the wall” spoken of by the patriarch Jacob, in a blessing to his son Joseph. The children born to this company in the Arabian wilderness, were the beginning of the fulfilment of this blessing. Compass points are also depicted, representing the liahona and the faithfulness of this woman, who journeyed into the unknown with her new husband and family, trusting in the Lord as they travelled. Her sash is coloured purple – a colour often associated with royalty, nobility and power. This represents her power and spiritual lineage as a daughter of God.
