Only This Cup
Melting snow supplies aquifers
that flow beneath desert sands
where women with goatskin vessels
draw cool waters from ancient wells.
Prairie windmills pump fluid that will fill
troughs for thirsty livestock
and washbasins for threshing crews.
In Venezuela, clouds of vapor,
white as angels’ robes, billow about
falls that plunge three thousand feet
to swell the Orinoco
as it winds to the Atlantic.
But this small cup contains
the covenant key—water,
blessed and sanctified—
and the constant, promised Spirit
that can make us free.
