Abstract

Although it is never directly stated in the Book of Mormon, a number of passages suggest that Lehi was familiar with and drew upon Zenos’s Allegory of the Olive Tree. This should not be unexpected, considering that Zenos’s allegory also seems to have been known to Old Testament prophets. Lehi's interest in Zenos's teachings helps explain why other Book of Mormon prophets—such as Nephi, Jacob, Alma, and Mormon—valued them as well. In doing so, they were following the example of Lehi, their founding patriarch.
