Abstract | The Prophet Joseph Smith received a revelation about tithing on 8 July 1838 in Far West, Missouri, in which the Lord announced, “the beginning of the tithing of my people” (D&C 119:3-4). Furthermore, a revelation given through Joseph Smith in 1831 had instructed the saints to use the “Lord’s day” as a day of “fasting and prayer” (D&C 59:13, 14). Elsewhere, the Lord gave the saints a commandment that they should “continue in prayer and fasting from this time forth” (D&C 88:76). There are many examples from the Book of Mormon that helped the early saints to understand the meaning and purpose of these laws and that surely helped learn to live them faithfully. |
