Abstract | Shortly after defeating the Gadianton robbers, the "pride cycle" caused the collapse of the Nephite nation. Ancient Near Eastern historical parallels show how this could occur. When some segments of the population of ancient Canaan became both proud and wealthy, they oppressed the poor and destabilized their society. It is likely that the same thing happened to the Nephites. This detail reminds the reader of the importance of taking care of the poor today. |
