Abstract

In Mosiah 20, the Lamanites suddenly broke their treaty with king Limhi and his people with a swift and violent invasion and subjugation. What could possibly have triggered the Lamanites to act so angrily? As it turns out, the abduction of a number of Lamanite maidens was seen as a flagrant violation of a covenant made between Limhi and the Lamanites. By understanding the nature of this abduction and the process of oath-making and keeping in the ancient world, readers of the Book of Mormon can gain insight into this otherwise perplexing narrative.
